• Make sure the shop is clean, smells good and is well organized.

  • Look for dry cleaning and wet cleaning equipment.  This means there are more ways to clean and properly care for your garments.

  • Educate yourself about how your garments should be cared for, and follow the instructions; they are there for a reason.

  • Look for a company with a solid reputation and years of service in the community.  If you are more comfortable with one member of the staff handling your clothing, then you should be able to ask for them by name.

  • Clothing is expensive, so protect your investment with a good dry cleaner.

Dry cleaning is the process of using dry chemicals to fight stains in dry cleanable clothing.  But there's much more to picking a good dry cleaner than just making sure he or she has the machines necessary.

Many dry cleaners will tell you that customers need to educate themselves about the dry cleaning process.  The first place to start is at the tag.  When you purchase a garment, it's usually the first thing that people want to get rid of, but it's crucial to keep because it provides instructions on how to properly care for a garment.

The tag is especially useful for dry cleaners that need to know what type of material they're working with for the best results.

It's also a good idea to look at how the dry cleaning company takes care of your clothing.  Is the garment properly cleaned?  Does the dry cleaner have more than one way of cleaning clothing, house wares, and leathers?

Look for a place that has both dry cleaning and wet cleaning equipment.  If a garment isn't cleaned up to the dry cleaner's standards through dry cleaning, they can put it through the wet cleaning machine.  Wet cleaning machines can also handle duvets, pillows, electric blankets, wool coats and more.  These machines are also a good way of treating material that has dye that runs.  A good dry cleaner will test the material and figure out the best way to treat it to keep the colour true.

The next thing to look for is whether the shop is neat and how the clothing is packaged.  A good company should provide you with at least a plastic bag to cover your clothing on the way home.  But don't leave your clothing in plastic bags because as humidity builds in the home, it becomes wet and your clothes can mildew.  It's best to remove the plastic as soon as you get home.

If it's a top of the line dry cleaner, they'll provide you with a cloth bag, these will protect your clothes on the way home and the fabric can still breathe.

As well, look for a dry cleaner that is up on the latest fashion trends and the best way to clean it.  They should be consistently looking at training opportunities, be knowledgeable about cleaning the latest fabrics and help you keep your clothes looking their best.

Also, look at how the clothes look when they're returned.  Make sure the clothes are not harmed, are crisp and back into the natural shape.  The clothing should also be finely ironed, including even unseen areas.  They should not have double creases or forgotten areas.

A top of the line dry cleaner will also go a step further and look for damage to the clothing and the best ones will offer minor alterations, and fix any missing buttons, or zippers at no charge.
